HUMOUR IN art is very serious business. It should help us see ordinary things in a magical light," says Derek Monteiro. "I am very serious about being funny in art."
The young Bombay illustrator-painter has a fine track record built over the last ten years. Starting with 'Physics versus Phantasy' at the Max Mueller, to the rivetting 'Bombay, A Whimsical View' at the now-defunct Just Desserts jazz cafe, and the 'Icons of the Invisible Psyche' at the Bajaj earlier this year, he's held ten exhibitions in all.
'Thought Tapestries', his bunch of mixed media works now on show at the British Council Gallery, reveals the fabric of our inner selves.
"The looms of consciousness," says Derek, "weave secretly and silently." And in very strong colours, you could say.
The IIT physics student, with no formal training in art, has surely come a long way. His show will be more than worth your while.
