A brave new generation

Dnyaneshwar Nadkarni applauds a new breed of artistes who have blended innovation with hard work and come up with stellar displays of their sensitivity to their surroundings

A highly talented young artist, Derek Monteiro, shows his paintings at the Alliance Francaise's Jean Cocteau galleries (under the director of the Alliance, Michelle Martin, this gallery is coming up in a very creative way.)

Monteiro, rooted in Goa, had shown sometime ago at the Gallerie Leela, and it was noticed at that time that he had a unique sense of satirical humour. Matching this is his exotic style of painting.

He calls this group of paintings "New Age". It is an apt phrase which traces itself to his own urbane temperament.

But he also has a great sense of fun, of design and colour.

The title of the show is - rightly - Tapping the Marvellous. Monteiro wants to "open up the inner doors of our minds, send our intellectual selves on a long, long holiday and allow us to enter the world of the marvellous, the consciousness of the new age, where anything goes and everything is possible."

A unique intelligence and originality shines through these paintings. Monteiro has held 12 shows previously, and they have all been characteristic of those qualities.

Although Monteiro works in a comparatively unostentatious medium, his work is solid and charged with meaning.
